Ouzi rice is a popular dish in the Middle East, especially at big gatherings. Despite its fancy appearance, it's much simpler than you might think!
Imagine layers of rice, meat, carrots, and peas topped with crunchy almonds – delicious, right? This classic Middle Eastern meal is made with basic ingredients: seasoned rice mixed with peas, onions, carrots, and aromatic ground beef.
The secret? A blend of cinnamon, coriander powder, and 7 spice, giving it that special Arabic flavor. People love serving Ouzi at family gatherings because it's easy to make, comforting, and everyone enjoys it.

  • cups Tazah Long Grain Basmati Rice rinsed & soaked for 60 minutes
  • ¼ tsp. Turmeric Powder
  • tsp. Black Pepper

  • 2 Bay Leaves
  • ½ tsp. Ginger
  • 1 tsp. Chicken Bouillon Powder
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • 2 tbsp. Cooked Meat Layer be generous
  • cups Water

Instructions

For the Nuts

  • Fry the almonds in the oil until almost golden then place on a piece of paper towel to drain. Reserve the oil as it will be divided evenly for the next steps of the recipe.

For the Meat

  • In a pan, heat the ghee and oil until melted. Add the beef, spices and salt. Cooking on low, stir and break the meat (no need to cover) until all the meat is cooked thoroughly. Set aside to cool. The meat should be juicy and not dry, don’t over cook.

For the Vegetable

  • In a pan, heat the ghee and oil until melted. Add the peas, carrots, spices, salt and stir for 30seconds. Add the water and cook on low covered until carrots are tender. Set aside in a warm place.

For the Rice

  • In a pan, heat the ghee and oil until melted. Add the rice and spices and fry on low for 30 seconds. Add the cooked meat and stir to combine. Add the water and bring to a boil. Let cook on medium until the water reduces and you see the surface of the rice. Bring the heat down to low, cover, and finish cooking until the water is fully absorbed. I like to place a towel under the cover once the rice is cooked to absorb any excess moisture and it helps keep the rice fluffy
  • Once all components are prepared, we can begin layering! Grab your favorite pot (6 quart) and start by adding the meat layer, followed by the peas and carrots layer, and lastly the spiced rice layer while pressing gently in between each layer. Let stand for 30 minutes in a warm place to set. Flip the pot upside down on a platter, top with the fried almonds and enjoy with a side of yogurt.
